This session is a case study presented by Michael Sapienza, CEO of the Colon Cancer Alliance. In January 2016, Sapienza spearheaded a merger of the two largest nonprofits within the colorectal cancer advocacy space. During this case study, he will first share what motivated both organizations to merge, as well as how this will continue to impact the organization moving forward. Sapienza will also discuss the many challenges that come up both through a merger and a fast-growing nonprofit organization.
In addition to discussing the recent merger, Sapienza will delve into topics such as the strategic opportunities and challenges for both fundraising and awareness for a disease most Americans don’t like to talk about. This entire organization and merger was sparked by the loss of Sapienza’s mother to colon cancer on Mother’s Day in 2009. In 7 short years, they have gone from virtually a $0 budget to a budget over $8 million in 2017.
